Dabke dabke

This guy is really cool. Yeah, I’m serious. Check out Omar Souleymans latest album Jazeera Nights for some serious Arabian grooves and teasipping psychedelica.

The sound of Ragnarok

I’ve previously written about the Danish director Nikolaj Winding Refn and his films. I went to see his last offering, Valhalla Rising, last weekend.

The movie itself is spectacular, but absolutely not a crowd pleaser. Very arty. As the protagonist is a mute viking thrall (played by Mads Mikkelsen) the dialogue does very little to move the film forward. Instead it heavily relies on the crisp photography to tell the story… but what really struck me is how well the the music fits every scene, displaying the emotions of the main character.

The music is written by Peter Peter (of Sort Sol fame) and Peter Kyed (of Svartbag)

Drumalistic App Madness with Pluto Pluto

I’m not much of a iPhone/iPod app freak, as I prefer keeping things more low tech, but the drum machine slash rhythm toy, Pluto Pluto, has blown me away! It’s simple, infectious and constantly evolving. Three things I hold very dearly (may that’s why I like zombies?!).

Caught the fever…

Goodnight…

Words are needless.

Black metal played on electronic instruments as folk music and then cut up on a computer

F***ed up title, I know. But it’s actually my best attempt to describe what the Norwegian band Ulver is doing.

First a black metal band, then an electronica act, then noise/glitch geeks, then sound track composers and now a full blown music freak show. Avantgarde? You bet. And cool as hell (not a great metaphor, to be honest, but it fits). Ulver plays tomorrow night in Aarhus at Voxhall – and I’ll be there enjoying every minute.

Digital Versicolor And A Fist Fight

Saw the movie Bronson recently and loved it! It’s made by Nicolas Winding Refn (who is Denmarks best director, in my opinion).

One of the songs from the film’s soundtrack stuck with me. It’s a synthy 80′es track called Digital Versicolor by the duo Glass Candy from their latest record Beat Box.

Best Music of 2009

Thought I’d share a personal Best Music of 2009 list. I’m gonna do it different than how it’s normally done though. I don’t care if the record was released in 2009 or not… good music isn’t about release dates. So this is more like a top 5 of the music I’ve enjoyed the most in 2009 (in random order):

Earth – The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull

The Antlers – Hospice

Mono – Hymn To The Immortal Wind

martinhall-relief

Martin Hall – Relief

The Ink Spots – The Ink Spots
